SCI-COMM: Nanotechnology comes to School. One more year, Funceramics takes part in the Festival of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (X edition) visiting different secondary and high schools to make visible the fantastic possibilities that arise from the connection between ceramics and nanotechnology, as well as to encourage young colleagues to choose STEM careers.

SCIENCE COMMUNICATION: In a new edition of the European Researchers Night, the members of Funceramics did their best to bring to the lay public the latest advances in the scientific missions that shape the European science policy. STAFF RECRUITMENT: In the framework of the CSIC Photocatalysis HUB, we were awarded with an introductory research grant JAE Intro ICU 2024: Alvaro Bueno García joined the team to work on the 'Synthesis and characterisation of core-shell photocatalyst systems based on NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2 with enhanced absorption capacity under sunlight'. PHOTO CONTEST AWARD: Our award-collector student, Ana Castellanos Aliaga, achieved a new trophy: 2nd prize in the Confocal Photography Contest 'Arte al Microscopio', organised by the Unidad de Cultura Científica de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UCCUAM) and the Laboratorio de Microscopía Confocal del SidI-UAM. The winning piece was entitled 'Fireworks of zinc oxide'.
INSIDE COVER: The graphical abstract of our manuscript on the use of graphene oxide-thiosemicarbazone hybrids towards the immobilisation of methylene blue and functional coumarins, a collaboration with the team of Sofia Pascu in UBath (UK), was selected for Inside Cover in Nanoscale Advances.
NETWORKING: Team mate Carlos Gumiel visited the Bernal Institute at the University of Limerick, IRELAND, to deliver a talk on the Sustainable Preparation of Thin Film Electroceramics and established new cooperation links in the field of sustainable processing of cutting-edge nanomaterials.
PHOTOCATALYSIS HUB: The kick-off meeting of the CSIC Photocatalysis HUB: "OASIS" took place on 4-5 April to plan and distribute the tasks to be carried out during the next 2 years. Funceramics joins this HUB within the researchline focused on Environmental Remediation (air and water decontamination).

CONFERENCE MEETING: Funceramics o-organised a specialised symposium at the LIX SECV Conference held in Zaragoza from 11 to 14 June. The symposium was devoted to ceramic materials with applications in electronics and energy, and featured the participation of Dr Blanca Arias Serrano from the Iberian Centre for Research in Energy Storage (CIIAE), who spoke a keynote on 'Advanced electrodes for solid oxide cells'.
PROJECT SHOWCASE: The EU H2020 ROADMAP project (grant no. 101004052) with the participation of Funceramics, was selected by the CORDIS service of the European Commission as a SHOWCASE for its key work in understanding the role of dust and clouds on Mars atmosphere.

SCHOOL VISITS: '10 to minus 9'. On the occasion of the IX Festival of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, our colleague Marco Peiteado visited the IES Alto Jarama (Torrelaguna, Madrid) and the IES Francisco Giner de los Rios (Alcobendas) to learn the youngsters on the impressive possibilities of Ceramic Nanomaterials.
WORKSHOP: Multidisciplinary Materials Day. Team mate Carlos Gumiel collaborated in the organisation of this event at the Escuela Politécnica Superior de la Universidad Nebrija, with the aim of informing the university audience and the general public about the relevance of studying materials in all their complexity. He also gave a presentation on Sustainable manufacturing of thin-film nanomaterials for the electronics industry. More info here.

SHORT STAY MISSION at TU Graz (AU). FPU student Ana Castellanos-Aliaga completed a 1-month stay with Dr Jurij Koruza's group at the Graz University of Technology, Austria. Framed within the activities of the CSIC LINKA20419 Hyena project, the visit focused on the preparation of porous piezoelectrics by freeze-casting and will have its continuation in Madrid (ICV labs) with the subsequent deposition of semi-conducting TiO2 nanoparticles.
TEACHING CHAPTER: Master in Applied Chemistry. In a new edition of the Master in Applied Chemistry of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, team mate Marco Peiteado coordinated the participation of ICV-CSIC professors in the specific subject of Advanced Materials.
COLLABORATION: Testing Sustainable Tech. Members of Funceramics visited the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales de Ciudad Real, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (ETSII-UCLM), to evaluate the possibilities of sintering multiferroic nanoceramics using Concentrated Solar Energy.
PUBLIC EXHIBITION: Museum of Science and Technology. The H2020 RoadMap project was represented in this temporary exhibition at the Spanish National Museum of Science and Technology (MUNCYT) in Alcobendas, Madrid. The exhibition covered various aspects of the research carried out within the project to determine the role of dust in the Martian atmosphere and so featured several posters, animated videos and a even some scale models of the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter probe and the Nomad instrument.
SCIENCE COMMUNICATION: Science in First Hand. In a new edition of the lecture series 'Ciencia en Primera Persona' aimed at bringing science closer to the lay public, Teresa Jardiel co-presents with IAA partner Olga Muñoz the latest advances of the European H2020 RoadMap project: 'Mars, our dusty neighbour in the solar system'.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. Team mate Laura San Miguel obtained the best qualification among the students of the 2023 ediiton of the Master of Applied Chemistry of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, with a research work focused on the environmental remediation of water by biomimetic procedures.
SCIENCE COMMUNICATION: ERN 2023. Funceramics team participated in a new edition of the EUROPEAN RESEARCHERS NIGHT, aiming at disseminating Ceramic Science to young students and the lay public. Exhibition was celebrated at Hospital 12 de Octubre, Madrid.

AWARD-WINNING Research. On the occasion of the XVIII ECERS Conference & Exhibition held in Lyon, France, our colleague Ana Castellanos-Aliaga was awarded the First Prize of the 2023 YCN Photo Contest with a captivating pic entitled 'Along the shore of the peptide sea'. CONFERENCE MEETING: Electroceramica 16. In close collaboration with Dr Alodia Orera and Dr Miguel Angel Laguna from the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragon (INMA, Unizar-CSIC), the entire Funceramics team organised and actively contributed to the 16th edition of the Reunión Nacional de Electrocerámica. TRAINING SEMINAR. Our colleague Ana Castellanos-Aliaga attended the course "Introduction to the characterisation of adsorbents and catalysts" held in Jarandilla de la Vera (Cáceres), organised by the Spanish Adsorption Society. Participation in the course was financed with funds from the SERENA TED2021-132779B-I00 project, aiming at acquiring new competences in adsorption characterisation techniques.
COLLABORATION with Polytech Marseille. Undergraduate students Marie Faye and Arthur Fontbonne, from L'École Polytechnique Universitaire de Marseille (EPUM, France), joined the team for a 3-month internship period to work in the field of solar photocatalysis focused on pollutant degradation processes.

SCIENCE AT SCHOOL. 'Mars in a box' educational project landed in Madrid. Teachers from IES Severo Ochoa (Alcobendas) and IES Jaime Ferrán (Collado-Villalba) were enthusiastic about the set of Martian experiments designed in the frame of ROADMAP H2020 action.
FPU PhD FELLOW joints the team Former JAE Intro student Ana Castellanos Aliaga was awarded with a 3+1 years FPU grant to carry out a doctoral thesis in the field of semiconductor photocatalysis.
PROJECT MEETING at Cambridge Graphene Centre (UK) As scheduled in the work plan of LINKA20419 HYENA project (I-LINK 2021 CSIC call) and also in the frame of project HYMP (PID2019-104118RB-C21), members of Funceramics visited Dr Boyang Mao at the Engineering Department of the Cambrigdge Graphene Centre, University of Cambridge (UK). Both groups updated each other on their work with energy nano-harvesters and new trials were also planned for the ongoing preparation of the electroceramics-2D materials hybrid systems.
PROJECTS FUNDED. In the framework of the 2021 call for Strategic Projects oriented to the Ecological and Digital Transition, our team was funded to investigate both the photocatalytic production of green hydrogen (TED2021-129876B-I00) and the selective recovery of nanoparticles from wastewater (TED2021-132779B-I00).

PROJECT GRANTED: Cometary and Asteroidal Dust Science (CATS) PID2021-123370OB-I00. The aim of CATS investigation was to fill the existing gaps in our understanding of the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and dust particles to enable a better interpretation of remote observations of comets and data gathered by future in situ missions. Research included the synthesis of cometary dust analogues with material science techniques.
PROGRAMA INVESTIGO fellow joined the team. With a 1-year contract of Research Assistant, Rubén Lizcano worked with us in the implementation of a Fluorescence Spectrometer System with the capacity to measure half-life times.
CONFERENCE MEETING. Funceramics attended the international Europlanet Science Congress EPSC2022 held in Granada, Spain. In the framework of H2020 ROADMAP project 'Martian dust and clouds: from lab to space', ceramic processing is also playing a role in the exploration of the red planet.

PATENT of INVENTION: TiO2 microspheres, method of obtaining them and their use as solar photocatalysts. Patent application to protect the technical know-how developed by Funceramics in the field of solar photocatalysts: TiO2 semiconductor microspheres with crystalline phases of anatase and brookite whose bandgap corresponds to the ultraviolet-visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Specifically, the procedure for obtaining these microspheres and their use as a solar photocatalyst for both the degradation of pollutants in liquid effluents and the production of hydrogen were protected.

Lab Measurements at CNH2: Team members visited the Centro Nacional del Hidrógeno at Puerto Llano, Ciudad Real, to measure the photocatalytic production of Hydrogen (HER) of TiO2-based samples prepared in the frame of project HYMP (PID2019-104118RB-C21).

AWARDED RESEARCH: Team mate Ana Castellanos-Aliaga awarded with the Best Poster Prize in Environmental Area at the 2022 Early Career Researcher Virtual Poster Meeting organised by the RSC Chemical Nanoscience and Nanotechnology interest group. The poster was entitled 'Selective removal of ceramic nanoparticles from aqueous suspensions by a bio-inspired approach' and was conducted in the frame of HYMP PID2019-104118RB-C21 project.
SCIENCE COMMUNICATION with young students on Europe's Day: The meeting was held at the Eugenio Trias Library, Casa de Fieras in Madrid. Among the activities, an Escape Room was played in search of women scientists, and the main objectives of the H2020 European project RoadMap were presented. The main characteristics of a scientific career were also explained to the enthusiastic audience.

SYMPOSIUM at SECV Conference: On the occasion of the LVIII Congress of the Spanish Society of Ceramics and Glass, teammate David G. Calatayud coordinated the organisation of a symposium focused on the latest advances in functional ceramics with applications in electronics, energy and biomedicine. Alodia Orera from the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón, Carlos Gumiel from Universidad Nebrija and Cecilia Granados from the Instituto de Cerámica y Vidrio worked hard to co-organise the event.
OUTREACH: 'What do we know about...?' T. Jardiel analyzed the role of nanoceramics in facing the new technological challenges. The talk was hosted at the Librería Científica del CSIC and broadcast live on the YouTube channel CSIC Divulga, see here.

'Science at First Person' OUTREACH: Team mate M. Peiteado described how the irruption of nanotechnology in the field of ceramics is leading to an exciting world of possibilities. Coordinated by the National Museum of Science and Technology (MUNCYT) in collaboration with CSIC, the presentation can be viewed here through the YouTube channel of FECYT (Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology).
PROJECT GRANTED - CSIC I-LINK+ PROGRAMME: Team mate D.G. Calatayud awarded one of the 15 grants of the CSIC international connection I-LINK+ PROGRAMME for the promotion of international scientific collaboration. The granted action also involves research groups in TU Graz (Austria) and Cambridge University (UK), aiming to develop novel energy nano-harvesters based on electroceramics and 2D materials.
CONFERENCE MEETING: Students Victoria Martín-Arroyo and Ana Castellanos Aliaga participated at the IX edition of the ICV Young Researchers' Days, held in Madrid (ES) from 24 to 25 November, presenting their latest findings in the frame of HYMP PID2019-104118RB-C21 project.

Lab Measurements at Central Laser Facility, UK: T. Jardiel, D.G. SCIENCE POPULARISATION: With the magnificent disposition of Ana Castellanos and Victoria Martín, Funceramics joins the ICV-squad at Atocha station (Madrid) to spread some good science among schoolars and the lay public, on the ocasion of the 2021 European Researchers' Night.

AWARDED RESEARCH: Ana Castellanos-Aliaga wins the 'Young Researcher' award at the XV Spanish National Meeting on Electroceramics (Vitoria-Gasteiz) in recognition of her work: "Semiconductor heterostructures grown by molecular recognition. Postgraduate students Verónica Naharro and Elena Pascual successfully defend the end-of-master project, achieving their Master in Applied Chemistry as awarded by the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. Supervised by David G. Calatayud, Teresa Jardiel and Marco Peiteado, the respective investigations attempted the fabrication of semiconductor nanocomposites based on titanium oxide and graphene oxide for photocatalytic applications (Verónica Naharro), as well as the synthesis of functional nanoceramics for their use as biomarkers in medical monitoring techniques (Elena Pascual). It was a real pleasure working with you two!!

Antonio Santamaría, TFG student from the Universidad Católica de Ávila (UCAV) starts a six-month stay in Funceramics.
He will be working on the characterization of ZnO-based semiconductor ceramics to complete his degree in Mechanical Engineering. Ana María Tuñón and Jorge Cebrían, bachelor students from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), also join the team for a two-month training period on ceramics processing. Ana María will work on the deposition of anantase nanoparticles via EPD (electrophoretic deposition), while Jorge will deal with the preparation of TiO2-Graphene composites.
Marco Peiteado participates as jury member of the PhD disertation Redox Mechanisms in low-temperature solution processing of materials for flexible electronics by Wouter Marchal, of the University of Hasselt, in Hasselt, Belgium.

Carlos Gumiel completes a three-month stay at the Institute for Materials Research (IMO) of Hasselt University in Hasselt, BELGIUM
Under the guidance of Professors Marlies Van Bael and An Hardy, he will mostly work on Bi-based multiferroic thin films processed by a sol-gel plus spin coating devised methodology.
Undergraduate student Raquel Flores starts a four-months internship stay in our laboratory.
She will be working on the synthesis of highly fotoactive TiO2-based materiales under the guidance of Dr. David G. Calatayud.
After a fruitful 19-months postdoc position at the University of Bath, in UK, David G. Calatayud returns to funceramics to joint Explora project. Welcome back home Master and Commander!.

Mara Bernardo has performed a 15-days scientific mission at the University of Bath, United Kingdom, under the guidance of Prof. Sofia Pascu.
The mission, supported by the JECS Trust of the European Ceramic Society, was mainly focused on analyzing the possibilities of core-shell RE-YVO4@SiO2 as-prepared ceramic nanoparticles as luminescence imaging probes for tumoral cells.

After one-and-half years of postdoctoral stay at Jozef Stefan Institute of Ljubljana, Slovenia, Dr. Mara Bernardo returns back to Funceramics.

A challenge for for new instrumentation in ICT", one PhD student from Funceramics Group, Miss Betriz Bernardo, will conduct a 1-month stay at the Materials Synthesis Department of Jozef Stefan Institute of Ljubljana, SLOVENIA, under the guidance of Professor Darja Lisjak. Her work will be devoted to the the synthesis of NiFe2O4-BaTiO3 multiferroic composites obtained under hydrothermal conditions.
Beatriz Bernardo and Marco Peiteado have participated at the 2nd Meeting of the IC1208 Cost Action: Integrating devices and materials that was hold in Madrid, SPAIN.
Beatriz presented her preliminary work on the synthesis of NiFe2O4-BaTiO3 multiferroic composites obtained under hydrothermal conditions.

The team has signed a 2-year project contract with the Spanish company ROCA Sanitario S.A.
The research to be conducted within this project has been entitled: Interactive ceramic elements. Exploration of sensors, actuators and indicators for light devices.
María Verde starts a post-doc position at the Institute of Photonics and Electronics in Prague, Czech Republic, under the guidance of Dr. Jan Lorincik
She will keep working with the soft processing of nanomaterials by Electrophoretic Deposition, this time applied to the field of hydrogen sensors. Congrats and good luck Maria!!
On July 23rd Mara Bernardo defended her Thesis project entitled "Synthesis, sintering and properties of BiFeO3-based multiferroic materials" and got the Ph.D. degree attaining the maximum qualification

AWARDED RESEARCH
David G. Calatayud and Teresa Jardiel won the FIRST PRIZE on the XXI Contest of Scientific Photography, celbrated in the occasion of the LII National Meeting of the Spanish Society of Ceramics and Glass (SECV). Obtained in the frame of project NANOBAC (MICINN-INNPACTO 2011 program), the FEG-TEM micrograph shows a faceted TiO2 anatase nanoparticle (20 nm in length) which results from a controlled semi-solvothermal process. Congratulations!!

As a result of the 2012 General Assembly of the Sociedad Española de Cerámica y Vidrio (SECV), the different sections constituting the Society have been renewed.
Marco Peiteado will hold the Secretary of the Electroceramics Section for the next 4 years, while A.C. Caballero will hold Vice-Presidency.
Maria Verde starts a three-month stay at the Materials Synthesis Department of Jozef Stefan Institute of Ljubljana, SLOVENIA, under the guidance of Professor Darja Lisjak.
She will be carrying research on Electrophoretic Deposition of ZnO-based materials. Soon after in October, Mara Bernardo will as well joint the Jozef Stefan Institute for another three-month stay, this time under guidance of Professor Darko Makovec, Head of the Materials Synthesis Department. The work of Mara Bernardo at IJS will be focused on the microstructural characterization of BiFeO3-based multiferroics.

Since year 2010 T. Jardiel and M. Peiteado teach several subjects on Advanced Functional Ceramics as a part of the "Master of Science and Engineering of Materials", organized by the University Carlos III of Madrid.
On May students of the Master visited the Instituto de Cerámica y Vidrio and took practical notions on the Synthesis and Processing of Functional Ceramics.

- "Hydrothermal growth of P-doped ZnO particles on substrates seeded by EPD of ZnO nanoparticles" .
On the 2011 call, the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN) granted M. Peiteado with a 5-year “Ramón y Cajal” tenure-track contract.
From 1st of April 2012 he is joining the Department of Applied Physics at the E.T.S.I. Telecomunicación of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) . More specifically he will join the team of Dielectric Materials headed by Professor Jose De Frutos. This team is Associate Unit with the Department of Electroceramics of ICV.
